MEMPHIS TENNESSEE made a winning return when staying on strongly to land a tactical renewal of the Ormonde Stakes.
The Aidan O'Brien-trained four-year-old, ridden by son Joseph, was last seen finishing third in the Irish Derby. Vivacious Vivienne was second in the Group 3 while Brown Panther was the disappointment of the race - coming home last of the four runners.
Memphis Tennessee, sent off the evens favourite, set a steady pace but by the time the foursome passed the stands for the first time Kieren Fallon had upped the ante, guiding Brown Panther to the head of affairs.
Vivacious Vivienne was the next challenger, moving from third spot to join the leader four furlongs out. Approaching the home turn both were being ridden.
At the bend Brown Panther, travelling against the rail, looked to have been snatched up - the Michael Owen-owned St Leger runner-up was never a factor thereafter.
O'Brien's patient tactics on Memphis Tennessee kicked into play and the pair powered on to a four-length victory. Calico Cat, making his racecourse debut at four, ran on well to finish a creditable third for trainer Alastair Lidderdale.
"I am delighted with him," said Aidan O'Brien of Memphis Tennessee.
"He's a lovely horse and he's grown up a lot. He has all the options, he is in all the races, like the Coronation Cup and the Hardwicke and we will see how he comes out of this. But he's a horse to look forward to. He has matured from three to four and
he had very good form last year."
Memphis Tennessee has been cut to 8-1 from 10-1 by Coral for the Ascot Gold Cup.
