Good Morning Star springs 50-1 shock

Report: Chester, Wednesday

Weatherbys Bank Cheshire Oaks (for the Robert Sangster Memorial Cup) (Listed) 3yo, fillies, 1m3½f

GOOD MORNING STAR sprang a 50-1 shock in the Cheshire Oaks to continue the perfect start to the May meeting for Franny Norton who won the opening Lily Agnes.

The Marwan Koukash filly was outsider of the whole nine-runner field but pipped the Ballydoyle 2-1 favourite Betterbetterbetter on the line. She returned a dividend of £65.70 on the Tote.

Winning trainer Mark Johnston said: "What an inspired decision with Dr Koukash loving this place and probably rather win this than the Epsom Oaks.

"She wouldn't have been running here if it wasn't for the Doctor's obsession with winners here - he had dinner for all his trainers nearby last night and this is his Royal Ascot and Epsom rolled into one."

Joseph O'Brien, having his first ride at the track, was perfectly placed on Betterbetterbetter and looked sure to win when subduing front-runner Everlong into the short straight but Norton followed him through and got there on the line.

O'Brien was given a four-day ban for his use of the whip on Cheshire Oaks runner-up Betterbetterbetter. The dates (May23-26) include the Irish 2,000 Guineas, although he can apply to BHA for a delay.
