SKIPPERS BRIG will miss the William Hill Trophy Handicap Chase on Tuesday, the opening day of the Cheltenham Festival, and will not run again this season.
The nine-year-old won at Ayr in December and surpassed that effort when third to Poquelin in the Boylesports.com Gold Cup over 2m5f, in which recent Racing Post Chase winner Razor Royale finished runner-up.
On Tuesday evening he was a 25-1 chance with the sponsors for his Festival race.
Trainer Nicky Richards said: "Skippers Brig has banged a joint and won't run again this season. Since we have eased him off it has settled right down and hopefully we can look forward to next season with him.
"He was in fantastic order beforehand but the ground was probably just going against him a little anyway."
