Sruthan takes Gladness on seasonal debut

Report: Curragh, Sunday

Big Bad Bob Gladness Stakes (Group 3) 3yo+, 7f

CRISTOFORO COLOMBO was unplaced in the Gladness Stakes as Paul Deegan's Sruthan took victory from Custom Cut and the staying-on Wannabe Better.

Ballydoyle's Cristoforo Colombo tracked the leader Custom Cut until two furlongs from home when Joseph O'Brien asked his mount for his effort, but found little for pressure.

Sruthan, making his seasonal debut, came through strongly to take it up and the charge of Wannabe Better came too late to take second from Custom Cut.

The four-year-old winner, ridden by Chris Hayes, won three of his six outings last season including the Group 3 Concorde Stakes on his final start.

"We thought he'd be a better horse this year than he was last season and that was a good start," said Deegan.

"He's definitely grown and won nicely. We'll think about giving him a shot at the Lockinge but there is a Group 2 - the Prix du Muguet over a mile at Saint-Cloud - early next month that he could go for instead.

"We hadn't him drilled for today, so there should be nice improvement to come."
