Henderson mulls Gold Cup bid for Barbers Shop
THE chance of the Queen's colours being carried in the Gold Cup for the first time became a very real possibility on Wednesday when her home-bred Barbers Shop figured among the 38 entries for this year's Totesport-sponsored Cheltenham feature, worth a record £475,000.
While eyes are instantly drawn to last year's 'big two', Denman and Kauto Star, jumping fans aplenty will be keeping their fingers crossed that Barbers Shop makes the line-up on March 13.
Barbers Shop has twice come close to landing big prizes at Cheltenham, finishing second in the Jewson Novices' Handicap Chase at the last Cheltenham Festival and chasing home Imperial Commander in the Paddy Power Gold Cup in November.
"A lot of people seem to think he's a Gold Cup horse, but we'll have to wait and see," said trainer Nicky Henderson.
"The one thing he doesn't have to prove is an ability to act around Cheltenham, because of his runs in the Jewson at last season's festival, and also this time around in the Paddy Power Gold Cup."
