CHELTENHAM will stage its Festival Trials day meeting this afternoon, with overnight rain easing the ground to heavy, soft in places.

A check was scheduled for 7am, but clerk of the course Simon Claisse was able to give the meeting the green light well in advance, as only 4mm of rain fell overnight. That rain has changed the going to heavy, soft in places (from soft).
Claisse said: "The weather did what was forecast, we're now heavy, soft in places. The turn away from the stands and climbing the hill at the end of the back straight is where the ground is not as heavy. The team have played a blinder to get it ready."
The two 2m5f chases and 2m4½f novice hurdle will be run on the round course as the chute is not clear of snow.
Cheltenham's contingency meeting for Sunday is now cancelled. There will also be all-weather action from Lingfield as the course passed its morning check.
