Long Run made to work hard to hold off Port

Report: Newbury, Friday

HE GAVE his supporters a bit of a fright, but Long Run got the job done and got off the mark for the season in narrowly holding Burton Port, who was closing his stablemate down all the way up the run-in to only finish half a length down at the line.

The Nicky Henderson-trained Gold Cup winner did his chances at Cheltenham next month no harm with a solid enough round of jumping, while the second, getting 10lb from Long Run, improved his prospects for the big one in running really well on his reappearance.

William Hill left Long Run unchanged for the Gold Cup at 2-1, while Paddy Power eased him out to 9-4 (from 2). They also go as short as 8-1 (from 25) about Burton Port now. BetVictor make the runner-up a 12-1 shot and also give Trevor Hemmings' charge a 16-1 quote (from 33) for the John Smith's Grand National.

Despite the narrow margin of success, Sam Waley-Cohen was pretty happy with his mount's performance.

Sam Waley Cohen: "really pleased"

"That is what we came here to do and you never know whether you are going to do it or not.

"I was really pleased with his jumping and that is exactly the kind of confidence-booster you want to go to the Gold Cup with. He has gone out there and done it really well," he said.

Long Run's jumping wasn't foot perfect - he was a bit low at one or two - but it was decent enough round a course which doestake a bit of getting.

In fact in the closing stages it was his fencing that won it, as challenges came first from What A Friend and then Burton Port, but when Waley-Cohen asked him for a big leap over the last couple he delivered, especially with a puissance-like effort at the last which maybe made the difference between victory and defeat.

Burton Port was staying on strongly coming to the final fence but he didn't get away as quickly from it as the winner, who had to stay on well up the long run-in, and did.

Henderson was naturally delighted to get the 1-2 up, and said of Long Run: "Sam said that there was loads there. He has enjoyed himself and jumped great. He took him there tanking and he was much more on the bit and fluent.

"Burton Port has been amazing us all. I thought he was good before he got injured but his work at home has been so much better than it used to be. He will definitely go for the Gold Cup as well."

You might expect a 4-7 favourite to win easier than Long Run managed, but it should be remembered that this is a race with a history of narrow victories and big upsets.

In 2001 1-3 favourite First Gold was beaten by novice Shotgun Willy in what was a major shock, while Kauto Star scraped home at odds of 2-9 when landing this race in 2007. And of course the horse whothis race is named after, Denman, unseated Tony McCoy when as short as 1-6 in 2010. Long Run certainly could have done worse.
