Bookmakers push Cue Card out on Festival eve

CUE CARD is being offered at a tantalising 3-1 by both William Hill and Ladbrokes on the eve of the Cheltenham Festival as the four day jumps extravangaza moves inexorably closer.

Colin Tizzard's stablestar has been a best-priced 5-2 chance for many months, but the firms have eased him out in an attempt to start the day on the offensive.

William Hill spokeswoman Kate Miller said: "Bookmaking is about taking a position on races, and Cheltenham is the time when you stand by your convictions. We want to take on Cue Card, and we're prepared to do it at a standout price.

"The 3-1 will last until we're full up with it, and then we'll batten down the hatches and hope!"

Joe Tizzard takes the ride on Cue Card, and will be hoping to start the meeting with a bang as he said in his Wincanton racecourse blog: "I'm hoping to win the opening race of the meeting! Our competitors include Recession Proof and Sprinter Sacre with Barry Geraghty on board."

The opening day's feature contest also looks wide open for punters, with firms unable to separate Menorah and Hurricane Fly.

With theabsence of Binocular muddying the waters at a late stage, most firms are 7-2 the pair with Peddlers Cross next best at a general 4-1.
