THERE was one equine fatality on the first day of the Cheltenham Festival when the Noel Meade-trained Casey Jones died after being brought down at the seventh fence in the William Hill Trophy Handicap Chase.
Meade said: "Sadly, Casey Jones broke his neck when he was brought down. It's a shame as he was a decent horse for us and his owner [Gillian Burke], but, unfortunately, these things happen."
The nine-year-old won six of his 20 races. Winner of a bumper and twice successful over hurdles, he achieved the most notable of his three wins over fences when landing the Grade 1 Knight Frank Novice Chase at Leopardstown in December 2008. He also won the Grade 3 Star Chase at Punchestown in October.
