Nolan still holds Gold Cup hopes for Joncol

TRAINER Paul Nolan is still hopeful his stable star Joncol can become a Cheltenham Gold Cup horse despite his defeat in the Lexus Chase at Leopardstown last week.

The seven-year-old, a25-1 chance for the Gold Cup with sponsors Totesport, won the John Durkan Memorial Chase at Punchestown on his penultimate start before finishing a length and three-quarters behind What A Friend at Leopardstown, when he was overhauled by the winner and runner-up Money Trix.

Nolan said: "I don't want to make too many excuses, we were beaten by a better horse on the day, but maybe our race tactics weren't the best and I blame myself for that. We probably won't make as much use of him the next day."
