Boussac aim for Soneva as Ana Americana flops
REPORT: FRANCE, Monday
Chantilly: 1m, 2yo fillies, Group 3
SONEVA (Yves de Nicolay/Christophe Soumillon) will head for the Prix Marcel Boussac after recording the first victory of her career in the Prix d'Aumale, in which Ana Americana was a major disappointment.
A sedate pace was set from the outset by Article Rare with 4-1 chance Soneva shadowing her for much of the race. Halfway up the straight the two fillies drew away from their other four rivals in what turned out to be a sprint finish, and they battled to the line. A nose separated the pair with Denomination two and a half lengths back in third.
The 11-10 favourite Ana Americana was never travelling comfortably and eventually finished fourth, beaten over three and a half lengths by the winner.
A daughter of Cherokee Run, Soneva had finished second on her two previous racecourse outings at Deauville.
De Nicolay said: "I feel this is the limit distance-wise for her and, subject to the owner's agreement, she will go next for the Prix Marcel Boussac."
Soneva was bought at last year's Keeneland September yearling sale by bloodstock agent Frederic Sauque for $170,000 and de Nicolay has followed the same programme as he did with this year's Group 3 Prix de Psyche winner Top Toss, who took this race a year ago.
