Chandler BBC plans supported by bookies
VICTOR CHANDLER'S clarion call to Britain's bookmakers for a nationwide protest vote against a massive BBC withdrawal from live horseracing has found instant support among his major rivals in the betting jungle.
Representatives of William Hill, Ladbrokes and Coral, owners of nearly 6,000 of Britain's 8,000-plus betting shops, are ready to act on Chandler's ideaof a petition of shop customers aimed at attracting half a million signatures.
Ralph Topping, chief executive of William Hill, called the BBC proposals to trim from 27 days a year to around 13, "a potential disaster for horseracing".
Topping, who runs a business with 2,300 betting shops in Britain, said: "I could not agree more with what Victor Chandler said in the Racing Post.
"It is up to all of us to support it so see how we can mobilise our customers. The more I think about it, the more we have to pledge our support."
