Beroni 5-1 favourite for Thyestes Chase

BERONI has been installed as the general 5-1 favourite for the Thyestes Chase after the prolific winner was confirmed on target for the Gowran Park feature on January 21.

The Troytown Chase winner has been upped 15lb after making the most of a switch to hurdles with a facile success at Punchestown on New Year's Eve, which took his tally to three wins since joining Willie Mullins.

Beroni had figured among the entries for Sunday's now in doubt MCR Hurdle before Tuesday's forfeit stage - and had been cut dramatically in the betting - but Mullins admitted the race was never under consideration.

He said on Tuesday: "Sunday's race [the MCR Hurdle] would have come too soon for Beroni and it was never an option for him after his win last Thursday.

"The plan at the moment is to aim Beroni for the Thyestes and I'll probably have a few other runners in the race but we'll see closer to the time how they are all doing."

Mullins, who has seven of the 36 initial entries for the 3m handicap, has won the race three times with Micko's Dream (2000), Hedgehunter (2004) and Homer Wells (2007).
