Drowne denied Group 2 win as Berlin noses home
Report: Germany, Sunday
Hamburg: IDEE 113th Hansa-Preis (Group 2) 1m4f, 3yo+
BERLIN BERLIN (Markus Klug/ Andreas Helfenbein) shocked the Hamburg crowd by getting up on the line to win by a nose from Steve Drowne's mount Runaway (10-1) with 1-2 favourite Girolamo (Peter Schiergen/Eduardo Pedroza) only third.
It was a rough race with plenty of scrimmaging, especially on the first bend, but that should not detract from the winner, who kept on gamely to give her young trainer his first Group winner with the 22-1 outsider.
Drowne said: "I had the run of the race and missed most of the trouble, but I thought I was going to win a furlong out and it is a pity to lose it on the nod. However my horse ran a great race and I have to be satisfied with that."
Pat Cosgrave was not so happy, as his mount, the Norwegian-trained Sir Lando, was one of sufferers and could only finish fifth
"I would definitely have been placed with a clearer run," Cosgrave said.
The winner, a four-year-old filly by Dubai Destination, was supplemented for the race, as was runner-up Runaway.
