Berki crowned Betting Shop Manager of Year
BARBARA BERKI was on Monday declared the new Racing Post/SIS Betting Shop Manager of the Year at an awards ceremony where seven other regional champions were also honoured.
Berki, 47, manages the William Hill in Nursery Parade, Marsh Road, Luton and has been a manager for 23 years. She succeeds Andy Bennett of Scotbet.
Her full-time staff are Martin Whelan and Sharon Ginnerty - who both accompanied her at the awards lunch - along with part-time staff Nilesh Amin and Giles Broom.
Berki, who is originally from Middlesborough, said: "I have worked in the industry for 29 years and will be celebrating my 20th anniversary with William Hill next month. I love my job and I have a lot to thank my shop team for."
A mystery shopper reported to the judging panel that "Barbara's attitude was excellent: friendly, approachable and genuine. The shop was particularly busy when I visited, but the atmosphere was enjoyable and comfortable. It was a very memorable experience."
William Hill PR director, Kate Miller, said: "Barbara is not only a fantastic manager, she is an outstanding ambassador for the industry.
"She epitomises all that is great about William Hill's team of 13,000 retail staff in the UK and embodies our key philosophy of being ‘the home of betting'.
"Barbara's enthusiasm, professionalism and positive outlook are a great credit to her, and this prestigious award is recognition that she is the best in the business."
Berki's prize includes a VIP trip to the Singapore International Airlines Cup in 2013. She will also become an ambassador for betting shop managers nationwide.
