Aussie trainer Pat Quinn killed in accident at track
Australia: The New South Wales racing community is in shock following the sudden death of trainer Pat Quinn after an accident at Canterbury racecourse on Wednesday.
Quinn, 63, who had only recently undergone a hip operation, suffered serious injuries in the saddling boxes when he was attending to his runner Insensitive after arriving at the course form his base at Port Macquarie.
The horse pinned Quinn against a dividing rail where he was trapped until assisted by a strapper.
Medical officers carried out emergency procedures before the former leading Sydney trainer was taken from the course by ambulance. He died in transit to St George Hospital.
Quinn trained at Rosehill for many years with the Ingham family among his major clients.
He later was responsible for pre-training the Ingham team at Belmont Park near Richmond before moving to Port Macquarie where he has been training successfully for 10 years.
Quinn's best horses included Group and stakes winners Go Mod, Top Charger, Legal Agent and Silk And Money. He also educated Octagonal for the Inghams before he began his racing career.
The strike-rate of his Port Macquarie stable has been among the best in NSW with his notable winnersin recent times including Seen Im, Rivagio, Paraded, Miss Shayanne and Insensitive.
"Pat was one of the most likeable blokes in racing and was held in very high regard by all his peers," said Peter V'landys, chief executive for Racing NSW.
"Pat was an outstanding racehorse trainer and did not receive the accolades he deserved.
"Our hearts go out to the Quinn family at this terrible time."
Quinn is survived bywife Gail, sons Craig and Marc and daughter Tracy.
Marc Quinn is a successful trainer in his own right and Tracy is married to former jockey and leading country trainer Tracey Bartley.
