Trained by Leon Macdonald, Southern Speed beat subsequent Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon in last year's Caulfield Cup but will not race again due to a sesamoid injury that Macdonald described as "quite serious".
"Why risk her after what she has achieved on the racetrack?,' Macdonald told the Herald Sun.
"She has raced in top company right through her career, won a Caulfield Cup and nearly A$3 million prize-money so she has certainly earned her retirement.''
The five-year-old mare will be sold by her present owners with a number of leading breeding operation out to secure her according to the Herald Sun.
In all, Southern Speed won three of her 20 starts and £1,717,394 in win and place prize-money.
