Newfangled bursts onto Guineas scene in Albany
Report: Royal Ascot, Friday
Albany Stakes (Group 3) 6f, 2yo, fillies
NEWFANGLED maintained her unbeaten record in impressive style as she blitzed her Albany Stakes rivals in the hands of William Buick for trainer John Gosden.
The daughter of New Approach, who made such a striking impression on her Newmarket debut, pulled further and further clear as she made her way past the two-furlong marker and she went on to score by two and a quarter lengths from Agent Allison, who made eyecatching late progress under Jamie Spencer.
William Hill were suitably impressed and introduced her into next year's 1,000 Guineas market as 8-1 favourite.
There was drama at the start as two horses were withdrawn, including Sendmylovetorose, who attempted to get under her stall and appeared to get wedged in the process.
Thankfully, she was none the worse for the incident and came away unscathed, although jockey Eddie Ahern seemed in some pain as he walked away. Kosika, trained by Mahmood Al Zarooni, was also withdrawn after she refused to go into the stalls.
But once the race was under way, it was all about one horse. Buick quickly sent the once-raced maiden winner to the front and Newfangled never saw another rival.
In Frankel-like fashion, Newfangled poured it on and powered clear in the rain-softened ground to reward favourite backers at 7-4.
"I was a passenger," said Buick. "That wasn't really the plan as there was a strong headwind, but she jumped first and when you fight a racehorse there's usually only one winner. She's a good filly and I've always liked her."
Gosden added: "She's got a lot of natural speed but she did it well. We'll go quietly now and aim at the Lowther and Cheveley Park -that sort of thing."
Agent Allison was always anchored towards the back but she made stealthy progress as she met the climb for the winning post. However, the winner was long gone by the time she hit top gear.
Premier Steps, representing Tom Dascombe, kept on well to take third ahead of the running-on Amazonas.
