Berkshire thrashes Chesham rivals

Report: Royal Ascot, Saturday

Chesham Stakes (Listed) 7f, 2yo

THE Paul Cole-trained Berkshire showed an electric turn of foot at Ascot as he stormed to a two-and-a-half-length win over favourite Bunker in the Chesham.

The winner scored at 16-1, with Bunker returned as 11-4 favourite. Ihtimal (7-1) was a length and a half behind in third, with Somewhat fourth at 5-1.

Berkshire has been introduced at 14-1 for next year's Qipco 2,000 Guineas by BetVictor, and Cole is certainly looking forward to next season.

Cole, celebrating his first success at Royal Ascot since 2003 and his fourth in the Chesham, said: "He's a big horse and his dam trained on and got better at three, so I shouldn't think you'll see much of him this year. One more run maybe.

"I bought him on-spec at the sales because I liked him so much. Right from the start he gave me a good feel. I didn't expect him to beat what looked a pretty classy field so easily.

The 19 runners came down the centre of the track with the lead being disputed by Somewhat, Friendship, Master Carpenter and Freedom Square as they entered the final two furlongs.

At that point it became clear Berkshire, racing closest to the stands side, was travelling best of all as he ranged up to the front rank. Quickly sent into the lead by Jim Crowley, he was never really threatened, although Bunker ran on well to finish clear second-best.

Ihtimal and Somewhat also finished off the race in determined fashion, hinting at staying ability.
