Channon and Hitchcott win Silver in Germany

Report: Germany, Wednesday

Munich: Bethmann Bank Silberne Peitsche (Group 3) 6½f

THE Mick Channon-trained Arnold Lane ran out a convincing winner of Munich's Silberne Peitsche ("Silver Whip") on Wednesday, profiting from a well-timed ride by Sam Hitchcott.

Starting at 2-1 favourite, Arnold Lane was always close up as Lipocco and Gracia Directa set a strong pace. He was third coming into the straight and as Lipocco dropped away Gracia Directa went on by a couple of lengths.

But Hitchcott sent Arnold Lane in pursuit and he had the filly's measure inside the final furlong to win going away by two lengths. Last year's winner Smooth Operator ran on to take third in the final stages, with König Concorde fourth and Nordic Truce fifth, but none of them ever looked like threatening the first two.

"The race worked out perfectly," said Hitchcott afterwards. "I had a good draw, they went a decent gallop and he picked up really well and thoroughly deserved his first Group race win."

Brian Watson, Channon's travelling head lad, said: "We are delighted with that and I imagine the boss is now looking through the pattern race book to see if he can find another suitable race for him."

Connections of the runner-up were also happy. "She won the Summer Stakes at York last year," said trainer Dominik Moser. "And it is quite possible that we shall go back to England for the same race again."
