Aljamaaheer scorches to Summer Mile victory

Report: Ascot, Saturday

Fred Cowley MBE Memorial Summer Mile Stakes (Group 2) 1m, 4yo+

ALJAMAAHEER followed up his impressive second in the Queen Anne Stakes to land a competitive Group 2 in fine style.

The well backed 9-4 favourite looked in complete control throughout for jockey Paul Hanagan and despite Famous Poet setting a formidable pace, the Roger Varian-trained four-year-old cruised up the outside in the final furlong and hit the front in the final hundred yards to win in stylish fashion.

Varian said: "He's got there in the end. He's improved with every start and that worked out well. He switched off and although Paul could have gone 100 yards earlier he waited and then used that turn of foot we know he has.

"He's well entered up in all the nice races and hopefully he's not finished yet. I'm sure he can hold his own in Group 1 company."

The improving son of Dubawi, who finished third in the Lockinge Stakes behind Farhh prior to his impressive run behind Declaration Of War at Ascot, finally turned his consistency into a victory beating Mull Of Killough by one length.

Hanagan said: "I haven't had much luck here lately but that was definitely deserved. I'm just delighted for the horse and his connections. They went a nice gallop and he's started to relax. He did it a shade cosily."

Paddy Power have made Aljamaaheer 8-1 (from 10) for the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.
