McCoy nominated for Sports Personality award

CHAMPION jockey Tony McCoy has the chance to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award for the second time as he featured among the ten-strong shortlist announced on Tuesday.

McCoy, who rode his 4,000th career winner at Towcester earlier in the month aboard Mountain Tunes, became racing's first winner of the award in 2010, and the 18-time champion jockey is in the running again.

Should McCoy triumph for a second time, he would become only the fourth sportsman to win the award more than once since its inception in 1954. Henry Cooper, Nigel Mansell and Damon Hill have all won the award twice.

Great British Racing chief executive Rod Street was pleased McCoy had made the shortlist, and said: "AP's nomination is not a surprise following his recent historic achievement of riding 4,000 winners. He is a sporting great and deserves to be in such illustrious company."

The nominees were revealed on The One Show on BBC One on Tuesday evening, and McCoy faces competition from Wimbledon victor Andy Murray, England batsman Ian Bell and Tour de France winner Chris Froome.

The winner will be revealed in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year show on December 15.
