Psycho - Thurles 06.01.11

Psycho saunters home for Carberry and Martin

Report: Thurles, Thursday

Beamish Stout Phil Sweeney Memorial Chase (Grade 3) 2m2f, 5yo+

PAUL CARBERRY and Tony Martin teamed up for a bloodless successwith Psycho in what looked a wide-open Grade 3 chase at Thurles on Thursday.

With the four-runner field all priced between 7-4 and 4-1, an evenly-matched contest looked likely, but Psycho pulled away from his rivals with ease in the home straight, putting the race to bed between the final two flights.

The 5-2 winner, pulled up when quietly fancied in the Vote AP Gold Cup last time, came home two and a half lengths clear of Quiscover Fontaine, with pace-setter and 7-4 favourite Let Yourself Go plugging on for third nine lengths further adrift. The other runner Clan Tara fell on the first circuit.

Martin said: "He was unlucky for Davy [Russell] at Cheltenham last time. He landed on top of the fifth and missed the next four or five and Davy did the right thing pulling him up.

"He schooled for Paul [Carberry] last week and it's great for him to get a win today. I'll put him in a few races at Cheltenham and Punchestown and we'll see what's there."
