Saturday night round-up: Rita wins re-run

RELUCTANT RITA (9-4) got up close home to land the re-run £1,000 final of the Winning Lines British Bred Puppy Derby over 480m at Newcastle on Saturday.

Craig Dawson’s bitch and trackmate Ludworth Charl had crossed the line together in the original contest seven days earlier only for it to be declared void due to a short hare, but it was another Dawson finalist, Target Sue, who called the shots this time.

Ludworth Charl challenged on the run-in and looked set to claim the spoils only for Reluctant Rita to power past close home to win by three-parts of a length in 29.15sec.

Earlier, Chris Allsopp’s Express Flame impressed when beating kennelmate Joscar by three and a half lengths in a Williamhill.com Northern Puppy Derby trial stakes, clocking a smart 28.69sec for the 480m.

All England Cup warm-ups went to Skywalker Louie (28.75sec), Patterdale Cejay (28.78sec), Ballymac Xavi (28.80sec) and Mags Gamble (29.08sec), while Brunswick Jenny (29.12sec) took an Angel of the North trial stakes and Welton Arthur won the Great North Run trial stakes over 640m in 41.12sec.

**AT Crayford, the in-form Ricky Holloway sent out a double through Mo Realta Frank over hurdles and 10/1 surprise Westmead Armour in a hot 714m open.

Mountcashel Gift held on by a short-head to win the feature Metro Cup, an S1 graded final worth £500.

**The Graham Holland-trained Knockglass Billy produced a stunning 28.15sec run when the fastest in the opening round of the Red Mills Irish Laurels at Cork,

Liam Dowling’s Ballymac Vic also produced a terrific performance in winning Heat 11 in 28.27sec.
