Miles Better is quickest in Romford sweepstakes
Maxine Locke: Her Slow Sovereign won opening heat at RomfordPICTURE: STEVE NASH
The opening heat of Romford's BAGS/SIS 500 sweepstake went to Maxine Locke's Slow Sovereign (5-1) who flew the boxes and dominated from start to finish. Paul Young's Ardsallagh Aoife, the well-supported 2-1 jolly, moved menacingly into second spot down the far side but could never get on terms with the winner who clocked 24.61sec.
Maggie Lucas's Greensted Dream (3-1) was an impressive winner ofheat two. Having made a better-than-normal start he was able to get inside the fast starting Shut The Gap at the first bend and once in front was never going to be caught. The latter, aided by some trouble behind on the final corner, managed to hold on for second spot and qualify for Thursday's decider - the winner clocked 24.63sec.
There was a serious gamble on Ernie Gaskin's Make Em Smile in heat three but the youngster ducked left out of the boxes and in turn hampered both Dirty Diana and Ivys Jodie. This left a solo run up the middle for Dave Mullins' Miles Better (4-1) who took
full advantage of the circumstances. Ivys Jodie railed well to move into second spot down the back and ran a game race to get within 1 1/4L of the winner who clocked a smart 24.52sec.
Draw for Thursday's final: 1 Greensted Dream, 2 Shut The Gap, 3 Slow Sovereign, 4 Ivys Jodie, 5 Miles Better (m), 6 Ardsallagh Aoife (w).
