OSCARS GOODBYE, friendless in the market as he drifted from 6-4 out to 5-2, proved the doubters wrong when setting the standard in the Romford Puppy Cup with a best-of-night success in the opening heat of the 400m competition.
Jim Reynolds’s local had blown chance of victory in a final five days earlier when moving off the inside draw and he looked well suited to a middle berth as he cracked out of trap four to take a lead he never appeared in any danger of losing.
Well-backed Gurtmullen Penny (5-1 from 8-1) went off in pursuit but made little impression on the leader who came home two and a half lengths to the good in recording 24.22sec (normal) with newcomer Jaytee Hellcat running an eye-catching race in third after a slow start.
Training honours on the night went to Eric Cantillon, who landed a 19-1 double courtesy of Blackrose Mia and Blackrose Eve
Blackrose Mia was first to score in heat three, biding her time to challenge until room appeared on the rails between the last two bends and then forging clear to beat Lenson Champ by two lengths in 24.54sec, while Blackrose Eve caught tearaway Yahtzee at the third bend in the finale and went on to beat Kinloch Tiger by two and a half lengths in 24.34sec.
Kinloch Tiger’s trainer, Chris Allsopp, had earlier gone one better when Express Rover impressively won heat five in 24.24sec, while other heat winners were Keith Crew’s Fahy Pine (24.33sec) and Derek Brighton’s Bens Angel (24.38sec).
