HIGHVIEW ROCKET (4-1) foiled a significant gamble on runner-up Geralds Gift when confirming heat form with Richard Devenish's charge in the £400 final of the Worthingtons Provincial Cup at Nottingham on Monday.
Chalked up at 9-2 with Bet365, the firm had slashed Geralds Gift into 5-2 (touched 3-1) during the day, but the support was relentless with the trap six runner being sent off 7-4 favourite at the track.
A significant key to his chance, however, was Highview Rocket failing to get clear from an awkward-looking trap three draw, and ultimately the inside runners crowding up.
That simply didn't materialise though with Highview Rocket showing fine speed and running a good opening turn to take the lead from Birchfield Hero at the second bend.
To his credit, Geralds Gift did keep on well to grab the runner-up spot close home, but not well enough for those involved in the gamble, with Highview Rocket scoring by a length in 29.25sec.
2009 Derby finalist Farloe Reason had been expensive to follow but looked to have a gilt-edged opportunity to get back to winning ways in the supporting 500m contest, and did precisely that when buildinga useful lead before lasting home by three-parts of a length in 30.08sec.
Rotar Wing (4-7, 17.76sec) was quickest in the heats of the Betfred Its Goals Galore Sprint making virtually every metre of the 305m trip in heat two, while thePaul Sallis-trained Hillcross Pluto was half a length too good for 5-4 favourite Officer Donagh in heat one, posting 17.99sec.
Draw for Monday's final will be made Tuesday morning.
