**THE racing career of Coolavanny Bert looks to be over after he sustained a broken hock when clear in heat three of the Williamhill.com Classic at Sunderland on Saturday.

John Gardner’s Derby third, a Category One winner having landed the Henlow Puppy Derby in February, was due to undergo an operation, but his owner-trainer is pessimistic about his racing future.

“He’s happy in himself and has eaten up,” said Gardner, “but the vet at Sunderland seemed to think it was a complex injury. Obviously we’ll know more after he’s been x-rayed and operated on but I’m not expecting him to race again.
