Bomber blasts to Produce win as Savva trio strikes
BOMBER BLUE and Romeo Turbo, Tuesday’s two fastest heat winners, meet in tomorrow’s second round of the Breeders’ Forum Produce Stakes over 480m at Hall Green tomorrow where the presence of another smart heat winner, Westmead Tina, and Stan James Puppy Derby finalist will ensure there is no margin for error.
With the qualifying trial stage not necessary for this year’s event, there was an element of thinning out about the first-round action, when a number of withdrawals also led to some relatively uncompetitive racing.
However, the pressure willbe cranked up a few notches from now on in the £15,000 competition and it is already obvious that Nick Savva faces a stern challenge if he is to land his eighth success. A first round treble was a good start, with Savva’s assistant, Gary Slater, saying yesterday: “We always target this event, and enjoyed a decent night. Westmead Ace was impressive, clocking a good time, and I was well pleased with Westmead Tina.
“She’d been laid off for a few weeks before the competition, but has always been a class bitch and there should be more to come from her.”
The other big clash tomorrow comes in heat two where the aforementioned Westmead Ace is pitted against Romeo Maldini and Mountjoy Ruby, the last-named having tied Romeo Turbo for second quickest time of the night on the 28.50sec mark, five spots slower than the Paul Sallis-trained Bomber Blue’s effort.
