PEGGYS STYLE credited Chris Allsopp with a rapid fire Category One double when coming through the field to land a thrilling £8,000 final of the Gain Feeds Yorkshire St Leger over 661m at Doncaster.

Allsopp, who landed the Kent Derby with Ballycowen Dave two weeks ago, beforehand doubted his bitch’s ability to come from too far off the pace in a field of this calibre, but that is exactly what she did.

Only fifth at the first bend as Mays Stewart led round from favourite Welton Arthur, Peggys Style closed in at the third bend where Welton Arthur was forced to check.

However, the market leader was able to get to the front between the last two bends only for Peggys Style to really rattle home and nab him close to the finish for a half length win in 42.21sec.

“It’s been a tough year but hopefully we’ve turned the corner,” said Allsopp afterwards, “it’s going to be hard to catch Mark [Wallis] but we’ll have a go at retaining our title.”

Trainer George Oswald enjoyed a successful evening as he landed a double courtesy of Droopys Hope in the final of the Maurice Jackson Waterford Crystal Trophy final over 483m and Foxy Red in a one-off sprint over 275m.

Foxy Red was one of four trap six winners in the early part of the meeting as wide runners seemed to enjoy an advantage – Jaytee Monroe, Restlessfarewell and Sevenup Bradders were the others – but conditions apparently settled later on with Derrane Jake shading Blonde Reagan over 705m and then Droopys Hope scoring from trap one.
