Weblog: The football punter
Let's all get aboard the Alex Express to Wembley
NOT hugely convinced that Gary Neville's qualities as a TV pundit quite earn him the right for a spot on Roy Hodgson's back-room team at Euro 2012.
I mean, Huw Edwards rarely puts in a bad shift these days reading the news on the BBC but I'm not sure he's been isolated by the Welsh FA as the man who can guide the principality to the next World Cup.
Still, in Roy we trust. And I also trust in Crewe to finish off Southend at Roots Hall tonight.
Shouldn't by rights be getting too excited by this match but live football's scarce just now and there's a worrying amount of cricket, tennis and other summery sports starting to figure on the sports pages. The Euros can't get here quick enough as far as I'm concerned.
Anyway, we need a punt for tonight and to me it's obvious. If there's any team in the country that has the right to finish a season being compared to a train it's got to be Crewe, and the Alex didn't let us down. It's no defeats in 17 for manager, er, hang on, let me just google it - that's right, Steve Davis.
And even though their last reverse was at Southend, I'm not concerned. A lot has happened between February and now and Crewe are a different beast. They are also a beast carrying a fancy old price tag around their necks, so it's all aboard the Alex Express to Wembley. Or something.
