TV is good but books are the key to Poker learning

WHAT is the best way of getting into poker? If you’re thinking about stepping into the world of online poker but have no idea where to start, read on.

I was first attracted to poker by watching it on television. Yes, the coverage will only cover the big pots and big hands but it
will teach you the fundamentals of the game and, for that reason, it’s worth a look.

After watching the game on television I decided that I wanted to learn how to play.

Instead of buying a book and reading about strategy I decided
to use the internet, which has everything you need to be able to understand the basics of the game, and you can learn it quickly for free.

Having played a little and after understanding the rules, I
decided to read some books and I have now read every book
worth reading – those that cater for a beginner and those more
suited to an advanced player.

One of the best books to read if you are a beginner is the Racing Post’s ‘The Definitive Guide To Poker’. It is educational, well written and, unlike a lot of poker books, it is not a difficult or dull read.

After a thorough study of the strategy books the next step is to start playing online practice tables (possible at Racingpostpoker.com). These are completely free to play and
are another key way to grasp the game and its mechanics.

Master those practice tables and the world could be your
oyster. Play in free-to-enter tournaments offering cash
prizes or play at the micro-limit cash tables. Whatever tickles
your fancy, you can learn and achieve for minimal outlay.

Just make sure you give yourself a chance of winning by
learning a bit about the game before entering the cutthroat
world of cash play.
