Weblog: What do you mean the Wi-Fi doesn't work? The life of a Racing Post reporter

Phoning from home to ward off ET

Doing my bit to prevent possible alien invasion and the extinction of the human race today.

Apparently new research by Nasa scientists suggests that green extraterrestrials - not green in colour but in the sense of being environmentally aware - may become so concerned at the damage we are doing to the Earth that they may decide to take pre-emptive action to save the planet and wipe us out.

All the more reason to watch your carbon footprint. So it was just as well that I did not need the exhaust-pumping car today as I was working on news from home.

Though there was still plenty of metaphorical hot air and steam generated as I was writing about the thorny subject of the ground at York.

The ground was either 'a total mess' as 'excessive watering has resulted in a permanently loose surface' so that you get 'a load of unfathomableresults'.

Or it was 'beautiful' and 'consistent from rail to rail and across the straight' with the criticism 'rubbish'.

No easy consensus there.

More agreement on the Saturday Ebor, rated a good thing by track, racegoers and bookmakers.

The latest running went down particularly well with winning trainer Brian Ellison, who admitted he and his wife were sipping champagne, sitting outside with the trophy, when I phoned at lunchtime.

A Sunday news shift means it's 'You The Jury' time.

These are the questions that I and various racing celebrities (well, Lee Mottershead and Stewart Machin) attempt to answer in tomorrow's paper:

1. If they were yours would you be sending Sea Moon and Blue Bunting to the St Leger?

2. Which two-year-old impressed you most during York?

3. Who do you think is the best sprinter around following the Nunthorpe?

4. Can Sir Henry Cecil win the trainers' championship again this year?

5. Which handicapper that ran at York will be worth following this autumn?

6. Which other horse caught your eye over the last few days?

Plenty of scope to make a fool of yourself there.

Last time I was on the panel I suggested that Sheema Classic winner Rewilding was a realgood horse and that Twice Over could bounce back from another flop in the Dubai World Cup.

But I also talked up J J The Jet Plane, Khawlah and Nideeb - none of whom has even been seen since - and Current Event, who was an expensivedisappointment on his only subsequent appearance.
