Moore - merrier than they'd have you think

Dangerous thing for a journalist to say but you really shouldn't believe everything you read in the papers.

If you go by what appears in the press, I was given a task straight out of 'Mission Impossible' today.

"We need a story on the Arc - call Ryan Moore and get him talking."

Now, the former champion jockey is deservedly renowned for his judgement of pace, his strength in a finish and his knack of always seeming to be in the right place at the right time but 'talking' is not what he is supposed to be about.

Read the papers and you'd think he was permanently tight-lipped, a guy that a Trappist monk would regard as unusually quiet and someone who would cross the channel rather than talk to a journalist.

Not true. While he'll never be confused with Kriss Akabusi, that is not really fair at all.

He is a young man who has spent all his life in racing, who takes his job very seriously and who is never going to warm to a frivolous approach to the sport.

But once you have earned his respect and shown that you too think and care about the game, then he is a good subject for an interview, one whose answers are thought through and whose opinions are worth hearing.

You'll have to get the paper to seeexactly what he said today but it is probably not giving too much away to suggest that he does not exactly see Workforce as a no-hoper at Longchamp next month.

Nor will it stun you to be told that Ayr racecourse chairman Alan Macdonald was pretty upbeat as we looked back on the Gold Cup meeting this morning.

Though even after reading the Post you might need to be Mystic Meg to know exactly what to expect in 12 months time. His enigmatic parting-shot was: "Watch this space, we'll have something different for you next year."

Nothing different about the Monday Jury, whose members were asked this week:

1) Can anything stop Deacon Blues' winning run when he goes to Ascot?

2) Can Dubai Prince and Green Destiny make an impact in the Champion Stakes?

3) Did we get any clues for the Autumn Double over the weekend?

4) Can punters now safely ignore the draw in the Ayr Gold Cup and just look for the best horse at the weights?

5) Which juvenile has impressed you over the last few days?

6) Which other horse caught your eye this weekend?
