Weblog: Hair and make-up advice, fitness plans and a growing band of catalogue bearers: all part of the Inglis Easter sales scene
No fireworks but day two is better at Inglis Easter
MUCH to the relief of vendors and the sale company, a degree of normality returned to the Newmarket sales complex. Fireworks were few, but four horses were sold for over a million Australian dollars and the average and clearance rate improved noticeably.
The sale topper, an Encosta De Lago colt was consigned by Emirates Park for His Excellency Nasser Lootah, who raced Mutawaajid in England in 2007 when trained by Mick Channon.

He is a Dubai-based businessman and runs a stud in New South Wales and Victoria. The colt is out of a half-sisterto the dam of Redoute's Choice. He was bought for $1.8 million by Dean Watts of Dynamic Syndications who was responsible for buying Reward for Effort, the Blue Diamond winner by Exceed and Excel.
A very athletic Redoute's Choice colt out of a Zabeel mare made $1.4 million and was consigned by Philip Esplin's Twin Palms stud in the Lower Hunter Valley.
Redoute's was responsible for the next two highest lots, one out of a sister to Alinghi and the other out of MakybeDiva's dam, Tugela.
Of the European agents, Shadwell were the busiest buying seven through Angus Gold. Darley bought four, Badger's two, BBA Ireland two, De Burgh two. Demi O'Byrne and Dermot Farrington bought one apiece.
Shadwell were perhaps fortunate that the Hong Kong Jockey Club boycotted the sale because of the licensing of Chris Munce by N.S.W racing after he had been suspended by the HKJC - some of Angus's purchases would have suited that market very well. Tuesday sees the final day of the sale with one hundred and ten catalogued for Session 1 and one hundred
in Session 2.
Once the yearling sales are over, studs standing
stallions aredue to reveal their nomination fees for the next
covering season.
Breeders should be given a chance of using the top stallions at a fee that will give then a better shot of getting a return in two year's time.
Hopefully, the returning good weather will also enable the Randwick Easter Carnival to deliver high quality racing in more favourable conditions than the rain- affected Rosehill last Saturday.
